Coupling junction between optical fibre and strip conductor - connects tapered fibre end via cylindrical micro-lens

The tapered fibre (1) is a monomode type with a numerical aperture, NA, of about 0.12, while the strip (7) has a transverse NA of about 0.5 and a lateral NA of 0.2. The rounded end of fibre is brought into close proximity with the cylindrical microlens (2). The lens is cemented onto the front of the substrate (4), so that its optical axis is in line with the centre line of the input/output coupling zone (7) of the strip conductor. The monomode light beam in the optical strip conductor has a transverse width of 0.3 microns and a lateral width of between 0.5 and 1.2 microns. The strip conductor may be in the form of a semiconductor laser.
