PURPOSE:To automatically focus the lens of a camera on a specific object after the direction of the camera is moved to the object only, by providing a means which changes the depth of field and another means which detects the location of an object having a specific feature amount by calculating feature amounts of objects. CONSTITUTION:The image of an object 1 is picked up under a condition where a diaphragm mechanism 8 is stopped in accordance with the control from a control section 13 and the inputted light quantity is photoelectrically converted by a sensor 4 and inputted to a feature extracting section 9. When, for example, areas of individual parts are designated as the feature amount for image pickup, the areas of individual parts are calculated at the feature extracting section 9. If the area of a desired object is designated from an operating section 13a under this condition, a camera drive control section 10 moves the camera to the direction of the object. Then the diaphragm mechanism 8 is set to a released condition and the distance from the lens 2 to the desired object is calculated at a distance calculating section 6. After calculation, a lens drive control section 7 moves the lens 2 by operating a lens driving motor 5 so that the lens 2 can be focused on the desired object. |
