PURPOSE:To prevent an input processing from being delayed behind an output processing and prevent a printing output from being left in a waiting condition, by writing character patterns at the time of the input processing, and reading character patterns to be written into a font memory at the time of paper feeding in the output processing. CONSTITUTION:When an input from a host computer 1 is a character pattern 2b, an input controller 9 fetches a character code 2b1, and sets the content of a character pattern registration checking table 4 corresponding to the relevant character to be '1'. A character pattern 2b2 in a temporary storage buffer 22 is written into a pattern buffer 11, and then the content of a writing address register 81 is updated. An output controller 10 outputs the contents of a page buffer 5 to a pattern converter 8, thereby printing. From the moment the printing is completed and a paper-feeding operation is started to the moment the content of a reading address register 82 coincides with the content of the writing address register 81, the output controller 10 fetches character patterns from the pattern buffer 11, and writes them into a font memory 6.
