PURPOSE:To form an infrared two-dimensional picture image with a resolution exceeding the pixel of a detecting element by dividing the visual field of observa tion and making convergent light therefrom sequentially incident upon a secon dary detecting element with prisms. CONSTITUTION:Visual field changeover prisms 7 and 8 are set in a position (thetaX, thetaY)=(-theta, +theta) corresponding to the first block 1 of an observation visual field 5 and information obtained from the block 1 (for example, resolution: 64X64 lines/mm) that is the quarter of one frame is imaged by the converging optical system 6 of a two-dimensional detecting element 9 with 64X64 pixels to be incident upon the element 9. After receiving a storing operation, an incident light is put into a readout mode. At this time, the visual field is changed over to the second block 2 of the visual field 5 at the same time, the angles of deflection of the X and Y direction visual field changeover prisms 7 and 8 are set to (thetaX, thetaY)=(+theta, +theta) and the same storing and readout operations as above are conducted. Thereafter, the same method is repeated and, by synthesizing obtained results, the readout of the picture image of one frame divided to a plurality of the blocks is completed.
