PURPOSE:To enhance the yield and efficiency in multikind and small-quantity production, by arranging two sets of painting apparatuses, each of which is equipped with a painting unit moving apparatus and a washing apparatus, along a strip plate running path so as to leave an interval therebetween and making it possible to transfer three painting units to each other between the two sets. CONSTITUTION:In painting units A, B, C, now, when painting is performed by the painting unit A and the painting unit C is washed in a first painting apparatus I, the painting unit B moves to a stand-by position P2 in a second painting apparatus II. In replacing painting, the coating roll of the painting unit A is separated from a strip plate S and the roll of the painting unit B is pressed to the strip plate S. The painting unit A retracted to a stand-by position P1 moves to the washing position W2 of the second painting apparatus II through rising and falling positions E1, E2 and the painting unit C moves to the stand-by position P1 of the first painting apparatus I.
