PURPOSE:To assume the distribution of the changing part of the basic level of the brightness of a sample in a measured area by inserting reference picture elements into the measured area based upon a sample value, obtaining an interpolating value and adding a matrix value having a constant distribution to the value. CONSTITUTION:An optional picture element column (or block column) over a reference area provided at upper lower edges is selected, concerning respective elements of said picture columns (a1j, a2j-amj), the inserting value from both edge reference picture elements a1j and amj and the difference value in the brightness information of respective picture elements read actually are obtained, and this is made into difference information columns (d1, d2, d3-dm). When an illumination unevenness in the measured area is large, difference information matrixes dij (i=1 m, j=1 n) corresponding to the element picture (or block) of the whole of the measured area instead of the difference information column may be used. Thus, a shading correction, etc., can be executed to the change component due to a temperature and a time including randomness, the memory size for calibration information can be minimized and the memory can be significantly saved.
