PURPOSE:To reduce connections of dots between adjacent picture elements in a high-density area and make it possible to express intermediate gradations with multipe gradations and high resolution, by setting a large picture element for obtaining gradations, using a resolution unit smaller than the picture element in a low-density area, and using a larger resolution unit as a new resolution unit in a high-density area. CONSTITUTION:A picture element 1 for obtaining gradations is provided as, for example, an 8 X 8 matrix, whereas a resolution unit 2 for obtaining resolutions is provided as a 4 X 4 matrix where the number of dots recorded is not more than 24, for example, or an 8 X 8 matrix where the number of dots recorded is not less than 25, and a gradation pattern is formed by using them. In each of the resolution units, the number of dots recorded is increased according to gradation patterns, for example, those called a centralized type. when the number of dots recorded in the picture element reaches a predeter mined number (e.g., 24), the resolution unit is switched to the 8 X 8 matrix, and further, the number of dots recorded is increased according to the patterns. |
