PURPOSE:To enable the formation of an alloy target by melting and casting and to improve magnetooptic characteristics by the other additive elements by incorporating light rare earth metals and Ti into a recording medium in addition to heavy rare earth metals and transition metals. CONSTITUTION:The recording medium which is formed on a substrate and permits recording, reproducing and erasing of information by light is constituted of >=1 kinds from the light rare earth metals Sw, Nd, Pr, Ce, and Eu, >=1 kinds from heavy rare earth metals Tb, Gd, Dy, >=1 kinds from transition metals Fe, Co, Ni and >=2 kins of elements from Ti, B, Si, Al, Cr, Sn, Pb, and Bi in which Ti is always included. An amorphous alloy consisting of the compsn. formula (LRxHR1-x)yTM1-y-xAz within the range of 0.1<=x<=0.4, 0.1<=y<=0.5, 0<z<=0.2 is used. The alloy target is thus formed by melting and casting.
