A machine tool (11) for machining workpieces has a table, arranged on a machine frame, for clamping the workpieces, a column (21) which is traversable in the X- and Y-coordinate axis and on which a tool spindle (27) traversable in the Z-coordinate axis is arranged, and furthermore a telescopically arranged cover (31), having movable cover parts (34), for the guideway of the X-coordinate axis, and a protective-wall arrangement (40) for the working space, which has front, side and rear protective-wall sections (41-44). A machine tool (11) of this type is to be provided with a less complicated, but just as reliable and tight protective-wall arrangement (40) for the working space. This is achieved by the rear protective-wall section (44) of the working-space protective-wall arrangement (40) being arranged perpendicularly and on the guideway cover (31) and having wall parts (56) which are arranged telescopically relative to one another and can be moved telescopically together with the telescopically arranged cover parts (34) of the guideway cover (31). Here, the rear protective-wall section (44) is arranged on both sides of the traversable column (21). <IMAGE>
