PURPOSE:To easily recognize whether a normal recording is performed or not by changing over an operation mode to a reproduction when a recording completion command is inputted, reversely shifting a magnetic tape for a prescribed time, deciding whether video information is recorded on the magnetic tape or not according to the output of a comparison means within the reverse shifting time and displaying the decision result. CONSTITUTION:When the command for the recording completion is received from a mode command circuit 8, a prescribed time running control circuit 10 reversely shifts the tape and stops and at this time, changes over a switch to the reproduction. During the reverse shifting, a pilot signal extracted in apilot processing circuit 13 is detected in a detection circuit 6. This output is compared with a preset threshold level in a comparison circuit 7 and the output of the comparison circuit 7 is sampled (n) times at a constant time interval in a system control circuit 11. The system circuit 11, when more than m times (1<=m<=n) are above the threshold of (n) times samplings, decides that a signal is normally recorded. A display circuit 12 having an LED or the like displays to inform an user.
