PURPOSE:To reduce a picture with desired density or size by changing the reading condition of the picture when reading the picture from a microfilm scanner and storing the changed reading condition in a data base. CONSTITUTION:The density and the size when reading image data are displayed on a high resolution display (CRT)7 in a designated window. Then, the density and the size of the picture are designated by a keyboard 8 or a pointing device 9. According to the designated density and the size, a prescribed frame is read from the microfilm scanner 1 and displayed on the CRT 7. When it is not required to change the density and the size, a key word or the like corresponding to the image data is inputted by using the keyboard 8 and the pointing device 9. In the formation such as the present key word, the density, and the size is registered in a retrieving data base file as one record.
