An electronic starting and protection device for preheating and starting fluorescent lamps (1) which are operated using the mains AC voltage has a starting circuit which, in addition to the electrodes (2, 3) of the fluorescent lamp (1), has an inductance (4) and a controllable semiconductor switch (12). Furthermore, a control section (21, 24, 31, 32, 37) is provided which repeatedly opens and closes the controllable semiconductor switch (12) for a predetermined time interval after switching on. After a predetermined time interval has elapsed, the semiconductor switch (12) is permanently switched off. The semiconductor switch (12) is connected to the output of a bridge rectifier (8) and consists of a MOSFET (12) which can be switched on and off a plurality of times, via a pulse generator (21), during one half cycle of the mains AC voltage. <IMAGE>
