The mechanism has a handle 20, a hook 50 engageable with a keeper 53 and a link mechanism 70 linking handle 20 and hook 50; a rigid impeding element 90 positioned intermediate handle 20 and hook 50 prevents the hook 50, and the link mechanism 70 from rotating about a fixed pivot pin 74 when the handle 20 is closed or down or when the hook is secured. The impeding element 90 is arranged such that it bears upon wall surface 94 of the hook. The impeding element 90 may be biased by spring 80 which also acts on handle 20 and a trigger mechanism 30 mounted in an opening 26 in handle 20 and having hooks (34), 35 for capturing link mechanism 70 although a separate spring may be utilised. Actuation of the mechanism is illustrated in Figs. 4-14, a pivot pin 76 which pivotally mounts hook 50 rotates about pin 74. After release of trigger mechanism 30 and rotation of handle 20 the hook 50 is released from keeper 53 by applying force F3 on handle 20 so that a pin 78 is displaced in slots 40,42 in the handle and the handle is rotated as indicated by arrow F4.
