The life of a valve member closing or opening the pouring opening provided in the bottom region of the casting furnace is increased, and improved sealing of the closure of the pouring opening before the pouring is achieved, by the valve member being attached to the mouth of the pouring opening from outside and being cooled by means of a cooling device, so that before the start of the pouring the melt solidifies or partially solidifies in the lower part of the pouring opening and liquefies only after removal of the valve member from the pouring opening in order to open it.
