PURPOSE:To improve the secondary combustion rate of solid carbon and the reactivity over the entire region of a furnace which makes melt reduction of a ferrous metallic oxide, etc., with the solid carbon by specifying the shape of the furnace and the disposition of the sets consisting of a top blowing lance and bottom blowing tuyeres. CONSTITUTION:The furnace body 1 has a rectangular cross sectional shape and the sets consisting of the top blowing lance 3 and bottom blowing tuyeres 2 are similarly disposed at prescribed intervals along the longitudinal direction of the furnace body 1. The furnace body 1 is first preheated and blast furnace molten iron, etc., are poured into the furnace from the upper part. Gas is kept passing through the tuyeres 2 to prevent the closing of the tuyeres 2 by the molten iron. O2 is immediately thereafter blown to the bath surface through the lance 3 to burn the carbon and to heat the molten iron by the heat generated by the combustion. Iron ore and solid carbon such as coal are continuously supplied into the furnace from this point of the time and the reduction of the iron oxide is executed in a molten state.
