PURPOSE:To read a document at a desired area by producing the read signal by deciding that the front face of a picture reader is set at a scan starting position when the reading position of a reading head part is scanned up to the front face of the reader. CONSTITUTION:When the manual scan is started to a picture reader main body 22, a roll 20 is revolved. A read signal generating part 19 checks the rotational frequence of the roll 20 and then produces the read signal after detecting that the reading position 12 of a reading head 25 of the main body 22 is scanned up to the scan strating position 23 on the front face of the main body 22 is its reading direction. The read signal is transferred to a picture processor 24 from an interface part 21 and at the same time the reading is started with the document by said read signal via a one dimensional image sensor part 16. The analog picture signal undergone the photoelectric conversion via the part 16 is converted into the digital signal through a signal processing part 18 and transferred to the picture processor 24 from the part 21.
