PURPOSE:To obtain the titled raw material which yields chalcogenide glass having excellent IR transmissibility and wheatherability by bringing a molten chalcogen raw material and specific metal into contact with each other at a high temp. and removing the formed metallic oxide and metal. CONSTITUTION:The metal (e.g.: Al) which is more easily oxidized than the chalcogen raw material is added at 1-1,000ppm to the chalcogen raw material consisting of Se and/or Te and said raw material is sealed into a quartz ampoule at >=10<-5>Torr degree of vacuum to heat and melt thereof, then to bring the oxygen in the chalcogen raw material and the above-mentioned metal into reaction, by which a solid soln. 5 contg. the metallic oxide is obtd. Such solid soln. 5 is put into a left chamber 2 of a distillation refining device and after dried gaseous Ar is purged into the chamber, the chamber is heated by heaters 1, 3 to melt the raw material. The evaporated chalcogenide raw material 6 is introduced into a right chamber 4 and is condensed. The formed metallic oxide and metal are left in the left chamber 2.
