PURPOSE:To prevent the stall of an engine without deteriorating the feeling of deceleration at the time of sharp deceleration, by gradually increasing the quantity of auxiliary air for an engine along with the shifting of an automatic transmission to a lower speed stage at the time of deceleration. CONSTITUTION:An automatic transmission 17 containing a torque converter 18 is connected to the output shaft 6 of an engine 1. A means 34 for detecting the deceleration of an engine 1, a means 24 for feeding auxiliary air to the engine, and a means 35 for controlling the auxiliary air feed means at the time of detection of the deceleration are provided. Besides, a means 32 for detecting the speed stage in which the automatic transmission 17 is, and a means 36 for modifying the control by the means 35 to increase the quantity of the auxiliary air for the engine according as the detected speed stage goes down are provided. When the quantity of the auxiliary air is set to be large at the time of the deceleration, the quantity of the auxiliary air is increased or decreased depending on the speed stage in which the automatic transmission 17 is.
