PURPOSE:To enhance the durability of the titled silica gel filler by forming the layer of a group IVb element of the periodic table except silicon or its compd. on the surface of silica gel, and then allowing a specified silane coupling agent to react with the material. CONSTITUTION:The layer of a group IVb element of the periodic table except silicon or its compd. is formed on the surface of silica gel, and then a silane coupling agent having an amino group is allowed to react with the material to obtain the silica gel filler. Titanium and zirconium are exemplified as the group IVb elements of the periodic table, and titanium chloride, titanium n- propoxide, zirconium chloride, zirconium n-propoxide, etc., can be exemplified as the compd. The compd., for example, is dissolved in a solvent and the soln. is brought into contact with the silica gel which reacts with the compd. to form the layer of the group IVb element of the periodic table or its compd. on the silica gel surface, or the thin film of the element or its compd. is formed on the silica gel surface by sputtering, etc.
