The machine has a cut width sensor (39) in addition to the cut deflection sensor (39). A compensating circuit (81) corrects the admissible cut deflection value using the cut width sensor. A monitor or control (83-93) produces an output signal when the value from the cut deflection sensor is greater than the corrected value. The cut deflection sensor is sited at the lower end of a fixed or moving guide arm (31,33) whose lower end has a blade guide (35,37). The cut-width sensor is assigned to a moving clamping device for the workpiece.
