PURPOSE:To record a picture having many gradations with comparatively high image resolution by forming a single picture element with plural dot matrices and printing the picture element after controlling the dot variable density at a multivalue level. CONSTITUTION:As shown in the figures, a single pictures element is formed with dot matrices of (vertical 2 X horizontal 2) and the dot density is shown the ternary level, i.e., levels 0, 1 and 2. Then the multilevel density is shown at every picture element by the number of dots printed to said matrices and the combinations of dot types. In other words, a pattern shown by a dot matrix 1 and a dot 2 printed to the matrix 1 varies into 9 patterns A-I as shown in the diagrams. Then 0-4 gradations are shwon by the patterns A-E; while 5-8 gradations are shwon by the patterns F-I respectively.
