PURPOSE:To improve the tarnish inhibiting performance of the titled inhibitor in the temp. range from ordinary temp. to a high temp. by using one or more kinds of oxycarboxylic acids and one or more kinds of specified hindered phenol compounds as effective components. CONSTITUTION:One or more kinds of oxycarboxylic acids such as malic acid and tartaric acid and one or more kinds of hindered phenol compounds represented by a formula (R-COO)nR' or (R-COOCH2)4C (where R is 3,5-di-t- butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl or 3,5-t-butyl-4-hydroxyphenylethylene, R' is 1-22C hydrocarbon, 4-18C alkylene glycol, t-butylphenyl or di-t-butylphenyl and n=1 or 2) are used as effective components and dissolved in an org. solvent such as alcohol. When the surface of a copper-base metal is treated with the resulting composition, the tarnish of the metal is inhibited even at such high temp. as about 150-300 deg.C.
