CONSTITUTION:In the operation of an internal combustion engine A, the fed quantity of fuel is determined by a determination means B depending on the state of the operation and corrected by a correction means C to serve to control the fuel for the engine. An aimed air-fuel ratio is found out by a determination means E depending on the state of the operation of the engine. A correction coefficient is calculated by a calculation means F depending on the difference between the aimed air-fuel ratio and the actual air-fuel ratio detected by an air-fuel ratio detection means D, to correct the actual air-fuel ratio by the correction means C through the use of the correction coefficient. At the time of acceleration or deceleration of the engine A, the fed quantity of fuel is corrected through the use of an acceleration- time quantity increase correction coefficient or a deceleration-time quantity decrease correction coefficient set by a setting means G. At that time, if the acceleration-time quantity increase correction coefficient or the deceleration-time quantity decrease correction coefficient is not smaller than a prescribed value, the correction coefficient for the actual air-fuel ratio is fixed by a fixing means H.
