PURPOSE:To obtain a steel strip having a clean surface under conventional annealing conditions by cleaning a coil of a cold rolled steel strip before tight annealing. CONSTITUTION:A coil of a cold rolled steel strip is cleaned to remove rolling oil, etc., sticking to the steel strip. The cleaned coil is subjected to tight annealing. At this time, the amount of gaseous CO generated is reduced by the cleaning. Accordingly, the amount of engine carbon produced on the edges of the steel strip is reduced and a steel strip having a clean surface is obtd.
