To produce a polyamide block copolymer, (a)100 parts by wt of a lactam (e.g. 2-pyrrolidone or epsilon -caprolactam) is suspended in (b) 50-2000 parts of an organic liquid (aliphatic or alicyclic hydrocarbon) preferably with (c) suspending agent (a polymer of mol. wt. 500-10,000,000, compatible with the liquid and with the lactam via a basic N or -COOH group) in amount of 0.01-20 part per 100 parts of (a), (d) and (e); to the suspension is added (d) 0.01-20 parts of an anionic polymerisation catalyst (e.g. a reaction product of a lactam and a metal compound, e.g. MgI2) and (e) a polymer activator or accelerator which is also a comonomer and has a functional group for lactam polymerisation in amount of 0.1-80 parts per 100 parts of (a), (d) and (e). The temperature is raised to up to 200 DEG C to cause polyermisation and the block copolymer is separated. Preparation of (c) and (e) are described; (e) need not be isolated before use. The copolymer can be mixed with pigment and/or stabilizer; it is granular or powdery and is easy to handle for molding as a nylon.
|
