An automatic selection apparatus for sheet material

Sheets 12 eg paper are continuously and automatically determined to be either good or bad by apparatus which carries the sheets 12 one by one with their leading edges held by a gripper 28, through optical type defect detection devices 14, 16, 18. Vibration of the sheet material is reduced and the defects can be detected exactly. A controller receives signals from the defect detection devices and drives switching devices 40 or 43 which open and close the grippers at a defective sheet discharge position 36 or a good sheet stack position 38 respectively.
