PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium wherein the still life is good and the abrasion of a head is little without deteriorating traveling and electromagnetic conversion characteristics by providing a magnetic layer contg. graphitized carbon and SiC. CONSTITUTION:Both a support consisting of a nonmagnetic material and a magnetic layer provided thereon are provided, and graphitized carbon and SiC are contained in the magnetic layer. The amount of graphitized carbon (graphitic carbon) to be added is preferably 0.5-5pts.wt. for 100ps.wt. magnetic powder. In such a case that the amount to be added is excessively little, the deterioration of traveling and the still life is caused, and in such the case that it is excessively much, the deterioration of electromagnetic conversion characteristics is caused. The rate of graphitization of graphitized carbon is ordinarily 20-80% and means primary particle size is preferably 20mmu-70mmu. When it is small, the production of graphitized carbon itself is difficult and the dispersibility is deteriorated, and when it is large, the reducing effect of the abrasion of a head is decreased and simultaneously the still life is deteriorated.
