PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium wherein durability in environmental conditions of a wide range is improved by laminating both a substrate vapor deposition layer and an island-like hard carbon film on a high molecular film and arranging a ferromagnetic metallic thin film thereon. CONSTITUTION:Both a substrare vapor deposition layer 2 and island-like hard carbon films 3 are laminated on a high molecular film 1, and a ferromagnetic metallic thin film 4 is arranged thereon. In other words, fine projections are made by forming the island-like hard carbon films 3 and contact area is truthfully reduced and these are acted for a magnetic head so that hard carbon having hardness near to diamond increases the apparent hardness of a magnetic recording layer provided thereon. Thereby a magnetic recording medium wherein durability is improved and the rate of error is not increased in short wavelength recording and reproducing and output reduction is not caused is obtained.
