摘要 PURPOSE:To control a control element directly by laser light and to increase response speed by forming optical layers, the refractive index of which is nonlinearly changed by the irradiation of light, to the respective intersected parts of the 1st waveguides formed to a matrix state on a substrate, at the same height as the height of the waveguides and allowing the control light to enter said layers through the separately provided 2nd waveguides. CONSTITUTION:Multiple quantum wells are formed on a GaAs substrate as the substrate 1 by alternately growing GaAlAs layers and GaAs layers by molecular ray epitaxy thereon and thereafter, the many nonlinear optical layers 2 are formed on the substrate 1. LiNbO3 is formed on the substrate 1 which is held coated with the nonlinear optical layers 2 and thereafter, the 1st waveguides 3 are formed to the matrix state thereon. Directional couplers are patterned and formed on the substrate 6 consisting of the LiNbO3 plate in order to allow the control light to enter the many nonlinear optical layers 2 from above. Four sheets of the substrates 6 are laminated and the top ends of the patterned and formed 2nd waveguides 7 are registered to the nonlinear optical layers 2 on the substrate 1, then the nonlinear optical layers 2 are projected through the 2nd waveguides, by which the light-light matrix switch is obtd.
