PURPOSE:To simplify an operation by starting the operation of an autofocus mechanism with a prescribed start signal to eliminate the switch operation, which starts the autofocus mechanism at every time when a target original picture is selected. CONSTITUTION:A control means 48 reads in the position (a) of a zone set by a zone setting means 40 and controls a servo motor 58 so that the projection light of an area corresponding to this zone is incident on a line sensor 56. When a user selects the reader mode, where a reflecting mirror 24 is placed in the position indicated by a full line in the figure, to move a mobile base 62 and selects a target original picture to project it to a screen 28, a part of the projection light is led to the line sensor 56 by a half mirror 52. When the user releases his hand from a handle 64, a retrieval completion detecting means 68 outputs a retrieval completion signal (b), and the control means 48 adjusts the exposure based on the output of the line sensor 56. Next, it is discriminated whether an image is included in the projection light inputted to the line sensor 56 or not.
