PURPOSE:To attain an accurate edit with good operability, by performing a process based on the sentence structure information, such as the units of a sentence, and a clause, or the part of speech of a word. CONSTITUTION:A character string in which a KANJI (Chinese character) and a KANA (Japanese syllabary) are mixed, inputted by an input means 1, is stored at a sentence storing means 2. A sentence analyzing means 5 refers a word dictionary stored at a dictionary storing means 4, and decides the sentence structure information, such as the unit of the sentence, the clause, and the word, and the part of speech of the word, for the character string in which the KANJI and the KANA are mixed, stored at the sentence storing means 2. A structure designating means 7 designates the sentence structure information. A structural position extracting means 8 refers a sentence structure storing means 6, and extracts a position in the sentence depending on the sentence structure information. A sentence edit control means 9 transfers respective means and the information, and realizes edit functions, such as insertion, deletion, movement, copying, and replacement, etc.
