PURPOSE:To execute an automatic retrieval at a high speed by reading out a position correcting data which is derived and registered in advance, and executing a correction of a position. CONSTITUTION:In case a frame image is not photographed in a frame P0 which is used as a 'reference frame', and the maximum address frames PM, PN of a row and a column, and a frame position setting method cannot be applied, a microfische retrieving machine is converted to a 'frame pitch adjusting mode', and three frames in which a frame image is photographed at that very moment are set. In such a state, by positioning exactly exactly a position of three frames, a coordinate value of a reference frame, a reference pitch and a reference correction quantity are derived, and an optional frame position to which an address is inputted can be set. In such a way, these three frames can be set optionally, but frames alpha, beta and gamma being in positions which are separated as far as possible are desirable, respectively.
