PURPOSE:To improve the exactitude of read by dividing an image memory into a partial areas in the direction which crosses the array direction of a character, varying appropriately a divided state, calculating storage information of every section, and detecting the character. CONSTITUTION:A storage area of an image memory 14 is divided into plural partial areas in the direction which crosses the array direction of a character. A candidate line buffer 15 has a storage area corresponding to the partial area of the memory 14, and stores successively information for showing a position of the character. Also, a line extracting part 9 scans sectionally the memory 14, and a divided state is varied by a character area designating part 10 so that a null area being below a character train interval is detected. Subsequently, information of the buffer 15 is read out and character train information is calculated in accordance with a storage sequence, and when a duplicated part exists, a processing is executed so that it belongs to the same train. In this way, read of every character train can be executed exactly.
