PURPOSE:To lower power voltage without requiring a bipolar video signal and to reduce power consumption by applying alternately a video signal and a negative potential signal to display liquid crystal cells and repeating the application. CONSTITUTION:A negative video signal 2 and a prescribed DC potential 3 are applied alternately to the display liquid crystal cells of a panel 7 to provide different voltages between adjacent display liquid crystal cells. The display liquid crystal cell applied with the negative video signal 2 at the preceding field receives the prescribed DC potential 3 at the next field and the display liquid crystal cell applied with the prescribed DC potential 3 at the preceding field receives the negative video signal 2 in the next field and the state is repeated at each field. Thus, no bipolar switching circuit is required in the generating circuit of the video signal, the range of power voltage is halved in comparison with a conventional method and the power voltage is lowered. Further, it is not required for a circuit generating a bipolar video signal, then the power consumption is lowered.
