PURPOSE:To reduce the read required time without deteriorating the picture quality by skipping the reading of one line after the read of a line and forecasting the picture data of the skipped line based on the preceding and succeeding read data. CONSTITUTION:When the end of an original paper sheet 5 approaches a read head 10, a read line number is initialized, the picture data of the n-th line is read from the head 10 via an input port 18 and stored in the prescribed area of a RAM 14. A stepping motor 22 is driven via an output port 19 after reading to carry the paper 5 by the pitch in the unit of dots, the (n+1)-th line is skipped, the head 10 is placed on the (n+2)-th line, the read processing of the picture data is applied and the result is stored in the RAM 14. Thus, the n-th and the (n+2)th line picture data are stored in the RAM 14 and the picture data of the (n+1)th line is subjected to forecast processing.
