PURPOSE:To make it possible to temper silicate glass or quartz glass chemically without adding sodium to a glass composition, by immersing a plate of wet gel in a metallic compound-containing solution, diffusing the solution into the surface of the wet gel, drying and calcining the plate. CONSTITUTION:A plate of wet gel obtained by sol-gel method using a metallic alkoxide and silica fine powder as raw materials is immersed in a solution containing a metallic compound. Then, the wet gel is dried into dry gel and sintered to give tempered glass. By the procedure mentioned above, the metallic compound is diffused into the surface of the wet gel and density at the diffused part is made higher than that at undiffused part. Therefore, compression stress acts on the diffused part after the sintering and glass can be tempered by the stress. Silicon, germanium, sodium, boric acid, lead, etc., may be preferably cited as the metal used. |
