PURPOSE:To produce an optical element such as micro-lens array in high productivity, by forming a patterned region having refractive index distribution or optical density on a porous glass and repeating the forming operation. CONSTITUTION:The following 1st step and the 2nd step are properly combined and repeated. In the 1st step, a refractive index distribution-forming agent or a colorant is fixed in pores of a specific region of a porous glass to form a patterned region having refractive index distribution or optical density. In the 2nd step, a composition hardenable by the application of energy is filled in the pores of the above region having refractive index distribution or optical density formed in the 1st step and is solidified to block only the pores of the above region. Thereafter, a refractive index distribution-forming agent or a colorant is fixed in pores of at least a part of the region other than the above region to form a patterned region having refractive index distribution or optical density. A region having refractive index distribution is formed by the 1st step and/or the 2nd step.
