摘要 A multicylinder, mixture-compressing reciprocating piston internal combustion engine for vehicles, especially passenger motor vehicles, is described, which has an air or mixture intake system divided into two stages. In this two-stage intake system, the first stage alone is connected in the lower load range and the second stage additionally connected in the upper load range. In addition, the intake pipes emerging from intake distributors and leading to the inlet orifices of the individual cylinders, are each respectively divided into two intake pipe branches, meeting a short distance upstream of the inlet orifice, of which the first intake pipe branch (8, 15) opened alone in the lower load range, produces an essentially swirled admission flow into the inlet orifice (19) of the cylinder, and the second intake pipe branch (9, 16), additionally opened in the upper load range, an essentially swirl-free admission flow. In order to achieve an optimum formation of the swirled flow in the lower load range of the internal combustion engine, it is proposed that the second intake pipe branch (9, 16) have means of closure (30) closing the flow cross-section in the lower load range, which means can be formed from shutoff valves (31), which are held in the closed position at least for as long as the first stage of the intake system, assigned to the lower load range, is alone connected, and which are connected to a throttle valve (35, 37), assigned to the intake system, for common actuation. <IMAGE>
