In a trunk piston for internal combustion engines with a closed cooling oil space in the piston head to receive cooling oil, which is continuously fed into this cooling space and drained therefrom, at least in certain engine operating conditions, the cooling oil only ever partially filling the cooling oil space (2), it is proposed to take measures which on the one hand guarantee a predetermined minimum quantity of cooling oil inside the cooling oil space and by means of which, on the other hand, exceeding of a fixed maximum quantity of cooling oil can at the same time be reliably prevented. These measures consist in arranging the drainage apertures (4, 5, 6) or partial areas of a single drainage aperture, where only one is provided, at different heights inside the cooling oil space in the axial direction of the piston. This can be achieved, for example, in that pipe connections (7, 8) project different distances into the cooling oil space (2). <IMAGE>
