A method for separating the impurities from contaminated metals by heating by means of hot waste gases is described, in which the waste gases are generated by a burner. The contaminated metals are introduced into a receiving chamber capable of being closed in a leaktight manner. During a heating-up phase, the waste gases from the burner are then fed into a first circuit, from a combustion chamber provided with the burner into the receiving chamber and from there, together with the dustlike or gaseous combustible impurities separated from the metal, back to the burner and the combustible impurities are burnt in the burner. The waste gases are then diverted into a second circuit in which they are led into a heating chamber surrounding the receiving chamber. Once the separation of the combustible impurities from the metals is complete, a third circuit is opened in which the waste gases are led back to the combustion chamber through a by-pass conduit, avoiding the receiving chamber and the heating chamber. <IMAGE>
