PURPOSE:To facilitate and stabilize the compression operation by providing a hollow chamber consisting of a flexible wall body which can be elastically deformed to a filter plate clamping part, supporting a filter wall with the flexible wall body, and making the filter plate clamping part freely expansible and contractible in the thickness direction of the filter plate. CONSTITUTION:Water is supplied prior to filtration into the hollow chamber 9 at the filter plate clamping part from a water tank 18 through a duct 20 by operating a pump 19. An array of filter plates is clamped by a clamping device 7 to form a filtration chamber 17, and raw liq. is supplied from a raw liq. tank 24. When filtration proceeds to some extent, the supply of raw liq. is stopped, and the array is again clamped by the clamping device 7. When the array is further clamped, the pressure in the hollow chamber 9 in the clamping part 2 is increased. Accordingly, the increased pressure is turned off through a safety valve 32, and the pressure of the hollow chamber 9 is kept constant. The water is gradually discharged to the outside from the hollow chamber 9, the clamping part is contracted, and the filtration chamber is compressed while being sealed.
