A method which permits a plurality of model railway trains of a model railway system to be controlled independently of one another is described. The installation of a control or decoder logic in the respective traction units to be addressed is dispensed with in this arrangement so that even the smallest known model railways can be used. Control is achieved in this arrangement in such a way that both the route and also movements of traction units as well as all control processes of points or signals are transmitted in a suitable form as data to a central processing unit. The propulsion voltages for the individual traction units are fed on a section basis to the route, when changing between sections, the corresponding propulsion voltages are carried over from section to section under the control of the central processing unit. The number of sets of railway wagons to be operated is restricted simply by the number of block sections provided.
