PURPOSE:To obtain a strong chucking force by a method in which an expandible cylindrical chuck is housed in a cylinder, and a cylindrical packing is fitted on the periphery of the chuck to form an oil chamber between the packing periphery and the cylinder inner wall. CONSTITUTION:An annular recessed housing 2 is formed on the inner wall of a cylinder 1, cut ends 3a and 3b lapped in the circumferential direction are provided, and a diametrically expandible chuck 3 is attached to the inside of the housing 2. A cylindrical packing 4 is fitted on the periphery of the chuck 3 to form an oil chamber 5 between the periphery of the packing 4 and the inner wall of the housing 2. When pressure oil is supplied under a condition that a pipe or bar (a) is inserted into the chuck 3, the bar (a) can be held by great chucking forces.
