Wire winding machines, especially armature winding machines, are normally provided with drive units which can be regulated over a rotation speed range of approximately 1:10,000 with respect to high winding speeds and good positioning capability. In order to be able to reduce the resulting cycle times in the case of such wire winding machines, it is provided in the context of the present invention that the wire (22) which is required for the winding process is supplied through the drive unit (12) to the winding arm of the wire winding machine (10), the shaft of the drive unit (12) being constructed as a hollow shaft and being flanged directly onto the hollow shaft (11) (which carries the winding arm) of the winding machine (10). <IMAGE>
