For separating a blank (25) from a strip (23) of blanks to be punched, a punching beam (13) with a punching outline (44) is used, which corresponds to the necessary punching line (41) between the individual blanks. The punching line corresponds to the rear outline (28) of the separated stack (25) of blanks. The punching line of the punching beam is open and freely selectable. The punching beam is smooth on its rear edge (54) and the separated stack (25) of blanks accommodates the displacement which occurs at an offsetting angle (29), which gives the remaining strip (23) of blanks a smooth, vertical cutting edge. <IMAGE>
