Improvements to the construction of reciprocating internal combustion engines which assist in ease of servicing and avoids failure problems associated with head gaskets, the construction including a number of cylinders (1), a crankshaft (2), connecting rods (17) joining the crankshaft to piston members (20) located for reciprocating in the cylinders (1), a crankcase (8) is provided for mounting the crankshaft and for locating lower ends of the cylinders (1) therein, and a cylinder head (10) provided for locating upper ends of the cylinders (1) therein, the dividing line between the cylinder head (10) and the crankcase (8) being located part way along the cylinders (1) and the cylinders (1) being formed by liner members (6) extending into both the crankcase (8) and the cylinder head (10).
