Device for optically reading a recording medium (5), wherein a beam separator (2) comprises a transparent blade provided with a phase network inducing an astigmatism effect in the beam traversing it. The detection devices (6, 7) are placed substantially along the emission axis (YY') of the optical source (1) and detect said astigmatism. The present device is applicable particularly to the reading of optical discs.
