PURPOSE:To simplify the editing operation of a user by translating again the equivalent of a word to be interpreted separately into another equivalent different from that already translated when said word is designated by a pointing device. CONSTITUTION:An original received from an input part 1 is stored in an original storage part 2 and a translation part 5 translates the original via a translation dictionary part 6 under the control of an editing control part 4. Then the translated sentence is sent to a translated sentence storage part 3 and also displayed on a display part 8 via a display control part 7 together with its original. If a user finds out a word to be separately interpreted with reference to the translated sentence displayed on the part 8, the user moves a cursor to designate the corresponding word in the original and pushes a separate interpretation key. Thus the part 4 retrieves the translation information on the word stored in the part 5 to select and translate again the equivalent different from that of the designated word which is presently displayed and displays it on the part 8. In such a way, a system changes automatically the equivalent for second translation just by designating a word with operation of the cursor in case the separate interpretation is desired for the word. As a result, the editing operation of the user can be simplified.
