PURPOSE:To compute an indicated means effective pressure accurately at a low cost, by sampling a cylinder internal pressure each time an isochoric change occurs, particularly, more finely near the TDC while a shift instruction is utilized for computation. CONSTITUTION:A pressure detector means (a) detects a combustion pressure of an engine, a capacity detection means (b) does the capacity of a combustion chamber thereof and a crank angle detection means (c) does a crank angle thereof respectively. A first sampling means (d) samples a combustion pressure each time the capacity of the combustion chamber changes by a first specified value and a second sampling means (e) does a combustion pressure each time the capacity changes by a specified value less than the first value within a specified crank angle range. Then, an arithmetic means (f) computes an indicated means effective pressrue based on output of the first sampling means (d) and the second sampling means (e). Thus, the cylinder internal pressure near the TDC is sampled more finely as compared with that at other places and a shift instruction is utilized for the computation thereby enabling the calculation of the indicated means effective pressure accurately at a low cost.
