PURPOSE:To perform slow combustion and to reduce the generation of vibration and noise of an engine, by a method wherein fuel is injected such that liquid fuel is adhered to the inner peripheral wall surface of a cavity formed in the top surface of a piston, and injection of fuel is completed before compression ignition is started. CONSTITUTION:A cavity 9, having a bottom wall surfaces 9a, an inner peripheral wall surface 9b in an arc of circle in cross section, and provided at the upper end part of the inner peripheral wall surface 9b with an annular rib part 9c protruded inwardly, is formed in the central part of a flat top surface 2a of a piston 2 reciprocating within a cylinder block 1. A protruding part 10, projected upward, is formed on the central part of the bottom wall surface 9a of the cavity 9, and a fuel collision wall 11 is formed in the top surface of the protruding part 10. Fuel G is injected through a fuel injection valve 3 toward the central part of the fuel collision wall 11, and control is made so that the injection of fuel is completed before compression ignition is started. This constitution performs combustion with a given time lag, and produces a slow combustion state.
